Going Beyond the GI Bill On July 1, President Bush signed legislation that will expand the education benefits of the GI Bill for veterans. Reinvigorating the GI Bill to ensure that it will cover the costs of a college education is something we must do — not only because it is the right thing to do for our veterans, but also because it is the right thing to do for our country. ___________________ Higher Education's Role in Preserving Lakes Michigan is a state defined, literally, by water. Without the Great Lakes, Michigan’s peninsulas would not exist, nor would much of the state’s manufacturing, shipping, recreation, and tourism offerings. As the state with more Great Lakes shoreline than any other state, Michigan has often been viewed as the protector of the lakes and, as the state’s only land-grant institution, Michigan State University is often involved in efforts to ensure these national treasures remain healthy and accessible, today and for future generations.
This Earth Day, America is in the midst of a spring greening. That's good news. But at American colleges and universities, we need to set an example and go beyond green. We need to embrace true sustainability, which means seeing things whole and acting accordingly. ___________________ Regional Success Depends on Access to Higher Education The symbolism of Lake Michigan College's wave, as a force of energy that is always changing, has never been more appropriate as we embark on 2008. In an international survey of higher education conducted by The Economist, 17 American institutions were included among the world’s top 20 universities. ___________________ Our Future Depends on Education Corporate leaders tell us that 90 percent of the fastest-growing jobs in our country require some college education, yet in Texas, only 13 of 100 ninth-graders will receive a college degree six years after high school.
